In international discussions, the Welsh youth movement, Yr Urdd, has been delighted to show that their domain name is .cymru.
The organisation of 50,000 children and young people is developing a joint project with similar movements in Ireland and Catalonia, two countries that have had their own distinct domain names – .ie and .cat – for many years.
“It was great to be able to say that we are now .cymru,” says the Urdd’s Chief Executive, Efa Gruffudd Jones. “We’re very proud to have the opportunity to use the new domain name.”
The timing was perfect for the movement as they were able to launch a new website at the same time as .cymru. And traffic is on the increase.
“We registered with .cymru as soon as we could,” says Efa. “We were one of the first charities to use the name.
“We had supported the campaign for a Welsh domain name from the outset. It has symbolic value.”
And the Urdd is leading in the digital world – the Urdd Eisteddfod app is one of the most popular of all through the medium of Welsh.
